As a symbol of the park district’s long-term stability and growth, trees are also vitally important to the environment and our community’s physical and mental health.

They provide clean air, wildlife habitat and beautiful forests for everyone to enjoy. For these reasons and more, Summit Metro Parks is celebrating 100 years by creating Centennial Groves throughout the park district, with a goal to reforest 100 acres this year!

Want to help? Here’s how to get involved!

Volunteer at a tree planting event:

Girl Scouts plant trees at Silver Creek Metro Park, 1978

Summit Metro Parks anticipates hosting two volunteer tree planting dates this year, with more information available in the coming months. Join the registry to be the first to know when these dates are scheduled. Later this year, we will also make available free Heritage Trees in several special species found in the Metro Parks. Check the Program & Events Calendar for tree distribution events.

Give a Centennial Tree:

Donor Lois Arnold (l) with SMP Chief of Philanthropy Jen Harvey

Your gift to the Centennial Tree Fund helps fill the Centennial Groves with beautiful, beneficial trees while also supporting care of the trees for the next 100 years! A $100 donation plants a tree, and donors will receive a personalized certificate, suitable for a gift or remembrance, that identifies the Metro Park where the tree will be planted.

Originally founded in 1921, Summit Metro Parks is the second-oldest park district in Ohio. Summit Metro Parks today manages more than 14,000 acres, including 16 parks, several conservation areas and over 150 miles of trails, and each year connects nearly 100,000 people to nature through community events and naturalist-led programs. Annual visitation in 2020 is expected to reach six million visits, approximately one million more than a typical year. The park district’s mission is to conserve, sustainably manage and value natural resources for the health and enjoyment of our community, and inspire people to connect with nature through clean and safe parks.
